A letter from your outgoing President

As you may have heard, I have decided to run for Mayor in October’s election. To avoid any perceived conflict of interests, I am stepping down immediately. After seven seasons (the last 6 as President) it is time for me to move on to the next challenge.

There are so many accomplishments I am proud to have been a part of. Driving the creation of the Brennan Park Skills Park in 2013 with Chris Hamilton is one of the highlights for me. So is seeing our membership grow from about 400 when I started to over 1600. Our event participation is the highest and most inclusive it has ever been. Women’s participation in the club is at an all-time high thanks in part to Mary Ann Taylor and her GirlsBike program. Youth Toonies are back and churning out the next generation of trail loving riders thanks to volunteers like Tom and Johnny who do what needs getting done.

We have elevated the profile of SORCA with government so they are beginning to see the massive social and economic benefits our trail network brings. We lobbied the District of Squamish for trail crew funding which was non-existent seven years ago and now is secured at $85K for the next 2 years. We completed the most ambitious fundraising and trail building project ever in the Stl’lhalem Sintl’ extension and Meadow of the Grizzly descent.

Even more meaningful to me than these tangible accomplishments is the fact that we have nurtured the growth of a beautiful SORCA community. You see it every Wednesday evening. It is a community of people who volunteer to do whatever is needed at the drop of a hat. It is a community that will always stop to help each other and anyone else. It is a community that selflessly volunteers countless hours building and maintaining trails solely for the enjoyment of everyone else who loves riding bikes.

It has been an honour leading our executive team. They are the most productive and motivated board I have ever been part of. My leadership philosophy has been to set a clear course, clear the problems out of the way, and let these people do what they do best. Everything that has been accomplished has been a true team effort.

I look forward to applying the same strategic, planning and leadership skills in building a stronger community throughout all parts of Squamish. And I also look forward to being the first mayor to do Cinco races and socials. They are just too much fun to miss.

I leave you in the incredibly capable hands of Melissa Sheridan, your current VP who is now the acting President (she is the only exec member who has been here longer than me). She will fill this role until the next Annual General Meeting in early 2019.

Thank you to all who have supported me and SORCA over the past seven years.
